Breech Consultation
Clinic:
As a midwife Alex has a personal interest in breech
presenting babies and breech births. By the 32nd week of pregnancy around
10-15% of babies are in a breech presenting position, some will turn
to cephalic (head down) by themselves but others will remain a breech
position. You may have heard that caesarean section is the only option
available to you if your baby is breech, this is not true and the breech
consultation clinic is here to offer you all the research and advice
you need to decide on your wishes for your birth.
Some women would like to try to encourage their breech
baby to turn to a cephalic presentation and this can be done by various
methods of complementary therapies or by external cephalic version,
a technique that will be carried out by an obstetrician within the hospital
setting. Other women would prefer to leave the turning up to their baby
and if they decide to remain in a breech position they then have the
choice of a vaginal breech birth or caesarean section.
All these options will be discussed in full with
you and you will be provided with fully researched evidence to help
you make you choice. Alex can also offer moxibustion treatment to encourage
your baby to turn if clinically indicated.
